Put a Hat on That boy, and a Few Other Updates

Most people with Albinism, wear a hat and sunglasses when they are outside. Cotton for the most part wears a hat, but has never been interested in wearing sunglasses. Recently, he has not even been interested in the hat. Of course I have control over sunscreen, and it is applied liberally and often. But I wonder, should I force the hat issue, if he doesn't seem to mind not wearing one. So far, I have been making him put his hat back on, but hmmm... he would know if it helps right? So, I am asking for advice from others effected by Albinism, make him wear the hat, or let him decide??

Mr. C and Rev, are up to no good as usual. Mr. C has started soccer and while he thinks it is "hard", he is warming up to the idea. Rev is all over the place! He is not walking yet, but I am not sure what is stopping him. He is very into coloring on the magna doodle, and eating chalk. Well, he is into eating just about anything that is not food. Although we have made some progress in that area. He likes things that I would never imagine him liking, so I guess I just need to keep offering him everything.

He seems to be developing fine, but I am so scared to take him to his one year check up. I keep putting it off. He is not showing any signs of ASD, but for some reason that one year check scares the hell out of me. I was too nervous to ever bring Mr. C to one!( Don't worry he has been to the doctor since then.) Just a mental hurdle I need to bound over. It doesn't help that our ped. is very opinionated about certain issues like he thinks we should all breast feed until kids are two, he is extremely pro vax, and he is against circumcision (which is one of the reasons I need to go.... certain things may need some ahem... fixing). Either way, I will put my big girl pants on soon.

If you have an opinion on the hat issue let me know. Otherwise, I will be chasing my boy around screaming "Where is your hat young man?"

I love hearing about Cotton's latest
achievements. So exciting!

My husband is albino. Probably there is some variation, but I would say that Cotton won't know until after he gets a sunburn whether he needed his hat. My husband says at the end of the day that he can tell he got too much sun that day. But he doesn't feel it at the time, necessarily. He did have two serious burns in his childhood, one was when he thought he was protected by leaves in trees and so didn't wear a shirt.

I know this is not what you wanted to hear. It must be a challenge when Cotton doesn't understand how important the hat is. If he has thick hair and you put lots of sunscreen on all the rest of him, then he's probably ok. Boy did my kids hate sunscreen at that age!

Good luck!

It's funny that you posted about this, because I was going to email you and ask you about it! I noticed in previous pics that he doesn't wear a hat or sun glasses, which amazed me because at 2 years, Emerson now insists on wearing both when we go outside. Maybe Cotton's just not as light-sensitive as he is?

Has Cotton ever gotten a sunburned head? I tend to be bad about sunscreen (i.e. only putting one thick coat on in the morning and forgetting to reapply), but I guess I am more stringent about the hat and glasses - esp since I like to keep his hair short and lots of scalp shows through.

Would it help him to pick out a few new hats on his own so he's excited about wearing them? I can imagine it's hard at that age when you have less control over them!

Good luck!
